The Pulsing Body Temperature of Thread
- A Dialogue Between Two Handcrafts Spun by Cloud Jersey -
The moment it touches you, your skin finds comfort. A lightness as if you were wrapped in a cloud, and a warmth that feels somehow nostalgic.
Cloud Jersey, an iconic item for pas de calais's AW26 season, is more than just a sweatshirt material.
It is only completed by the special fabric slowly knitted by the Kinan Meriyasu Factory, a circular knitting factory in Wakayama with over 95 years of history, being washed with the utmost gentleness by Osaka's Nitta Sarashi Kogyo, which has been passed down through three generations of the same family since before the war.
In a modern world where efficiency and speed are demanded, they deliberately knit at half the normal speed and wash it using time-consuming, labor-intensive traditional methods.
What lies there is the sincere attitude toward craftsmanship that has remained unchanged for 28 years since the brand's birth, shared by pas de calais and its artisans.
CHAPTER 01
Kinan Meriyasu Factory (Wakayama)
Knitting the Air Together
––The Plush Texture Created by Half-Speed Circular Knitting Machines
Since its founding in Wakayama City in 1930, the Kinan Meriyasu Factory has continuously produced circular knit fabrics 24 hours a day. Cloud Jersey is knitted slowly at about half the normal speed of the knitting machines, without putting unnecessary tension on the yarn, allowing air to be incorporated between the fibers.
The key to realizing a variety of knit structures and textures is the delicate skill of the artisans, which takes 10 years to master. The artisans' intuition, discerning the slightest vibrations and changes in sound from the knitting machines and controlling the tension of the yarn with their hands, forms the foundation of this miraculous softness. It is a sensation as if the natural loft of the yarn and even the air of Wakayama are being knitted together.
Cloud Jersey is a French terry material consisting of three layers: the face, middle, and back. While general French terry uses thick single yarns, the back uses
thick 30-count two-ply yarn, suppressing fuzziness and realizing a smooth touch and beautiful loops. Furthermore, by deliberately using fine 40-count compact single yarn on the face as well, it achieves an elegant and sophisticated surface finish.

CHAPTER 02
Nitta Sarashi Kogyo (Osaka)
Drawing Out the Natural Beauty and Softness of the Material
Nitta Sarashi Kogyo, based in Chuo-ku, Osaka, specializes in refining, bleaching, and dyeing natural materials.
Possessing advanced techniques specialized in knit fabrics, they perform the finishing process that brings out the superb softness and texture of Cloud Jersey. To avoid moisture and water exposure, the machine control equipment is installed in a dedicated control room, inspections are performed by human eyes, and the final judgment is made by the president himself. Under this unique and thorough management system, the fabric is processed all at once in a large 400kg vat to suppress variations in texture and color, realizing stable quality.
Furthermore, to prevent wrinkles caused by sudden temperature changes, it is cooled slowly over time and carefully finished so as not to give unnecessary stress to the fibers.

A New Cloud Jersey Born from Collaboration with Artisans
Air-filled jersey material gently wraps the body like a cloud.
The Kinan Meriyasu Factory and Nitta Sarashi Kogyo, both with long histories since their founding, support pas de calais's craftsmanship.
The accumulation of artisans finely adjusting the finishing method according to the condition of the yarn and fabric creates an exquisite, light, and warm texture.
Aiming for "softness that lasts even after washing," a new resin processing method has been adopted. Rather than relying solely on fabric softener, by fixing the softness into the fibers themselves, it has evolved into a material that maintains its pleasant texture even after repeated washing.
The philosophy that pas de calais cherishes is "Wearing essential value that is unaffected by the times."
The reason they have continued joint development with Japanese production areas and artisans for many years is their belief that the "comfort" and "texture" that cannot be created through mass production are born from the accumulation of human hands and experience. The president of Kinan Meriyasu says, "Only 2% of products made in Japan are actually made in Japan. Among them, pursuing meticulous craftsmanship and aiming to be the 'best in Japan' so that customers can be truly satisfied, we face the knitting machines every day together with the artisans."
The president of Nitta Sarashi, who inherits that baton, also says, "The work of washing becomes invisible at the time of completion. Even so, we want you to feel 'somehow comfortable' the moment you put it on.' For that one moment, we continue to wash it carefully every day.
In an era of increasing efficiency, deliberately valuing the techniques and sensibilities passed down and repeatedly trying and failing together with the artisans. This accumulation of craftsmanship leads to the comfort unique to Cloud Jersey.
The softness you feel the moment you put it on.
That comfort is imbued with the techniques of a factory with nearly 100 years of history and the quiet passion of the artisans.
